- from the mouth of the Avon River; population
- (1986) 299,300. Principal city of the
- Canterbury plains, it is the seat of the
- University of Canterbury. Industries include
- fertilizers and chemicals, canning and
- meat-processing, rail workshops, and shoes.
- Christchurch uses as its port a bay in the
- sheltered Lyttelton Harbour on the N shore of
- the Banks Peninsula, which forms a denuded
- volcanic mass. Land has been reclaimed for
- service facilities, and rail and road tunnels
- (1867 and 1964 respectively) link
- Christchurch with Lyttelton.
